The Morgan Collection

As Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week comes to an end, it’s fitting to discover a home collection created by a former ready-to-wear design director who took his passion for fashion and reinvented it into furnishings that now appear in some of the world’s most exclusive hotels.

The Morgan Collection (created by Andrew Morgan) approaches design by combining modern and organic influences. From pillows and throws to bed wraps and blankets, the textiles are environmentally responsible and constructed from globally sourced yarns.


The Inspiration

After spending 18 years creating apparel lines for Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Saks Fifth Avenue, Burberry and others, Andrew Morgan decided in 2000 that it was time for a change. "I felt that as a person I needed to evolve," Morgan told EDGE, "I wanted to address products that transcended the surface of a person - I didn’t want to just deal with the epidermis, but create something that a hotel guest could be soothed and embraced by or that you could live with in your everyday life."

The Hotel, Spa and Retail textile collection was born. Inspired by his world travels, the designs fuse organic and modern styles. Morgan is also at the forefront of textile technology and is constantly on the lookout for new and natural fibers.

"The fibers that we’re using are categorized as ’cradle to cradle’ - something is taken from a prior source and brought to a base and reconstructed into a new formula," says Morgan, "A T-shirt - recycled, cut up into little pieces and made into a new fiber by a shredding process - is transformed into something entirely new. And it can be done again and again."

Morgan’s team works with several mills, turning recycled and reconstructed materials into a new fiber or filament. Contrary to the national importing tend, his company is actually exporting to China, Dubai and Mecca.

Offering guests access to purchase the same luxury furnishings they experience in their hotel rooms is a relatively new phenomenon according to Morgan. In fact, some properties haven’t caught on, but that doesn’t seem to stop the ambitious shopper. He says that he has had customers contact him simply by finding the name and website of his company on the tag of a product.

Why? "The leap is simple," says Morgan, "They love the way a piece looks and feels. It’s easy care. [For a commercial contract] we guarantee our products for 300 washes but they feel like residential. They have a durability that took years to construct."


Ready-to-Chair

Fueled by merging the practical and fashionable sensibilities of ready-to-wear, Morgan created the ModSok collection, an array of premium-constructed slipcovers. Consisting of the BedSok, ChairSok and HeadSok, the pieces can easily refresh a dull bedroom or dining set.

This latest addition to the Morgan Collection further strengthens his commitment to create designs that are not only beautiful but also have purpose. After a recent stroll through some local shops in his New York City neighborhood, Morgan recalls that "things looked like pure surface to me. These were items that did not appeal to a meaningful purchase. I want to create pieces that say, ’This is who I am. This reflects who I am as a person. It attracts me because it moves me.’"

Morgan’s final word of advice: "Buy less and more important things. Something meaningful."

The Morgan Collection can be experienced at dozens of hotels worldwide, including Four Seasons London, MGM Bellagio, Fairmont Mayakoba and the St. Regis Washington DC. For the home shopper, the company will soon be integrating an e-commerce component on their website, www.morgancollection.com, as well as opening a new showroom/design space in New York City.
