Cult of Michael Jackson @ Figureworks

About this event

Rusel Parish, a Brooklyn-based artist, will be having his second solo exhibition at Figureworks from September 11 - Nove 1, 2009. This exhibition explores the obsession with Michael Jackson and is entitled "Cult of Michael Jackson".

This exhibition presents the life of Michael Jackson from childhood to present and has been a focus for Parish over the last three years. Continuing societies endless fascination with MJ, this work does not judge the addiction but tries to understand its complexities. Presented in a chapel like format, the work brings together pop expressionism with religious iconography and is a study of how media and cultural obsession can meet in a powerful way, multiplying images and ideas globally. This exhibition was not created nor altered around Jackson’s recent death but had been scheduled earlier this year to coincide with Jackson’s fall world tour. With this shocking turn of events, the exhibition now presents a range of emotions from celebration to sadness.

Figureworks is located at 168 N. 6th St., Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY 11211, one block from the Bedford Avenue "L" train. The gallery is open to the public Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 1-6 PM and is dedicated to exhibiting contemporary and 20th century fine art of the human form.
