Into The Lion's Den

Christian Cintron READ TIME: 2 MIN.

"Into the Lion's Den" is a suspense thriller for the gay set. It goes beyond a B-list gore-fest to the heart of some pretty deep topics facing the gay community. The film manages to not only deliver the sex and quips you'd expect from a gay film but also some pretty thoughtful storytelling.

"Into the Lion's Den" follows three friends on a road-trip from Los Angeles to New York City. Michael (Ronnie Kroell) is nursing the wounds of the worst possible betrayal. Johnny (Jesse Archer) is hoping to escape his life as a jaded party boy for greener pastures in a new city. Ted (Kristen-Alexzander Griffith) hopes to leave his sheltered past and learn how to be a man. As they approach their destination, one night out changes their lives forever.

Jesse Archer shines as a washed up party boy with the perfect blend of sexy mischief and pensive introspection. He definitely demonstrates acting chops beyond his comedic roles in other films. Ronnie Kroell has discovered a new form of naked acting that suits him. There are a few moments of the film that the gratuitous nudity would be laughable if Kroell wasn't so captivating and a halfway decent actor. Adult film star Jake Steele also has a very sexy, fairly graphic cameo in the film.

"Into the Lion's Den" explores some of the thanatos of the gay community. It questions some of the reasons that gay men put themselves in dangerous situations and, worse yet, what things can happen when they do. It's easy to write off online sex apps and anonymous meetings as a hot time, but what about when those moments go wrong. "Into the Lion's Den" offers up a startling visage that manages to not only be bone chilling but also enough to make you question your next hook up.

The DVD includes a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film. It also features commentary by director Dan Lantz ("Bloodlust Zombies"). It also includes the blooper reel, deleted scenes and trailer you would expect from a DVD.

"Into the Lion's Den" is sexy, startling and provocative must-see film. Beyond just offering up a suspenseful thriller that hits the gay community where they live, it also asks some pretty deep questions. There are moments that will have you gripping the edge of your seat and moments where you might be gripping something else. But at its core, it has some great storytelling and great performances. It will definitely change the way you think about the next person you meet online.
