Long in advance of its release, Bruno, the new comedy from Sacha Baron Cohen--who scandalized audiences with "Borat"--generated controversy.

The film centers around a flamboyantly gay Austrian "fashionista" who, like Borat before him, comes to America to befuddle and confound the locals.

The previous movie so enraged some Americans caught on film--who actually believed they were dealing with a tourist from Eastern Europe--that lawsuits were filed.

The new movie has yet to engender any suits, though Cohen was reportedly arrested in several countries while making the film.

A June 18 BBC reported that Cohen showed up for the movie’s London premiere in a saucy rendition of the uniform worn by the Queen’s Guards, and greeted the crowd with the proclamation, "This is the most important movie starring a gay Austrian since Terminator 2."

The article ran down various plot points from movie’s episodic structure, in which Bruno, looking to promote his name and rehabilitate himself after a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction, throws himself headlong it controversial situations, such as "converting" to heterosexuality in order to generate headlines.

Mention was also made of a "cage fight" in Arkansas involving a love scene between men and an anti-gay, chair-hurling crowd.

The article summed up the film by saying, "Bruno pushes the boundaries further than Borat ever did."

Added the BBC, "Sometimes you question whether he has finally crossed the line into offensive bad taste--and, latterly, whether you were right to laugh at it--but the audience all seemed to guffaw and groan in the right places.

"They even gasped in horror when they were supposed to."

The review cautioned that, "if you are easily shocked this certainly won’t be for you, but some will find it outrageously hilarious."

A June 18 Associated Press article also reported on Cohen’s antics at the premiere, quoting him as coming out with some blistering japes at the royal family’s expense.

"I just wanted to do something that was flattering for the royal family," Cohen--or rather, Bruno, as Cohen was in character for the premiere appearance--said. "Something that the queen--I’m not talking about Elton John--would really appreciate."

Added the comedian, "You know the British royal family and the Austrians have got a lot in common. We’re still the only people who are proud to wear a swastika."

Like something right out of one of Cohen’s movies, some GLBT leaders expressed concern that the new movie might derail the equality movement, costing gays some of the momentum they have picked up with recent victories, reported the AP in a June 17 item.

The article quoted the senior director of media programs for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, Rashad Robinson, as saying, "We do feel the intentions of the filmmakers are in the right place--satire of this form can unmask homophobia--but at the same time it can heighten people’s discomfort with our community."

The studio behind the movie, Universal, expressed confidence that the film’s target audience would get the jokes in the spirit in which they were intended.

"’Bruno’ uses provocative comedy to powerfully shed light on the absurdity of many kinds of intolerance and ignorance, including homophobia," a statement from Universal said.

Bruno himself took on gay stereotypes: to the crowd at the London premiere, he announced that the film would hopefully counter "all the negative stereotyping of the gay community done by ’Milk,’" the Oscar-winning Gus Van Sant biopic of slain gay politician Harvey Milk.

this movie made me sick and i would not recomend it to anyone

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-10 02:28:09

I definitely recommend this movie to every person. Excellent!!!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-10 03:08:12

THat was the sickest, most disgusting movie ever made. Yes some parts were histerical, but overall sick and deranged. Do not go see this if you have morals.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-10 17:44:58

morals? if your morals were mature enough and quote on quote "personally have morals" then you should be able to withstand the barbaric presence of Bruno. Yes this film was deranged and obscured, but sacha performs an act no one could ever bear seeing themselves repeat. that’s why this movie is bad yet great, it’s because he acted as an extreme stereotypical gay, which then unleashed the stereotypical audience, the ones who would bag and hate on his performance, in the end sacha isn’t like this, but that’s the point, the point is he did something no one would and won’t ever do. he unlocked doorways and insights, therefore he changed our whole perspective on the quote on quote "open-minded" lifestyle. to be able to bear this makes you more holy and non-judgemental than any other being. i give him 5 stars. though i do feel he could’ve sent out the same message through less vulgure actions. i recommend this to everyone, just cuz we need a change as a society.

Bruno sucks just like he did the whole movie. Totally disgusting! Don’t waste your money...please don’t waste it.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-10 22:37:33

This movie changed my life, and I shed tears as I convulsed with laughter as Bruno was whipped by a saucy lady at a swingers party. People that are sickened by this movie are not inherently homophobic, but some of the intolerant hics that Bruno encounters, including a misogynistic priests looking to convert gay men to heterosexual ones, are even more shockingly subversive than the flamboyant protagonist. People that are sickened by this movie sympathize with the throngs of people that rallied "straight pride! straight pride!" at the fight that Bruno staged. They might as well have been shouting "white pride."

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 02:19:36

Let’s not fall victims to money-making schemes such as this rip-off movie. There are many porns we can watch for free on the internet.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 02:30:50

Borat was refreshingly funny and insane, this movie is 15% funny the rest insults our intelligence, Everybody knows’sex sells’

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 19:24:13

I am 17. After reading reviews I do not even think the movie should be in theaters because of horrific pornographic content. I feel victimized.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 19:31:45

when did everyone feel they have to be a politician. Loosen up and enjoy all of the deranged hilarity that is Bruno.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 19:37:36

dumb. no social conscience. inappropriately rated. the "parents" who rated this movie are the kind of morons who should not be responsible for children. obnoxious.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 19:47:44

This was a Great comedy that shed light on the typical things said about homosexuality. Besides the trailers shown obviously showed the magnitude of how provocative or even offensive this movie would be so don’t complain about it!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 20:00:55

No they didn’t. It would have been profane to show trailers of certain material in the film. I would not have seen it. U r kidding yourself.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 20:06:07

I was absolutely horrified by this movie. Being homosexual myself, I thought this movie was a disgusting in its blatant exploitation of the gay community, as well depicting gays as perverts. I honestly was unaware that it was even legal to show pornography in "R" rated movies... This movie was horrific. I loved Borat, but this was just disgusting.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-11 20:06:15

    Bore on!!!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-12 00:32:20

come on, loosen up. it is a COMEDY... and labeled as such. I could say that any movie with white people acting as complete rednecks is offensive to all white people... i think this only offends some because they’ve never been jabbed at before. I mean how often do we see minorities exaggerated in film? like how black people are always portrayed as loud and ghetto, or asians portrayed as smart nerds. come on, it’s time somebody made fun of gays, stop getting your panties in a wad and just enjoy the humor. but yes, this movie is very vulgar and offensive, so don’t see it if you are easily offended.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-13 01:31:02

A total crack up (no pun intended) - Lewd, crude and gut wrenchingly funny - if you do not have a sense of humor, and do not understand the term (COMEDY) do not go. If you need to laugh your ass off - and the place is dark anyway, nobody is going to see you blush - GO - It really brings out the sad side of the ignorant and intolerant society.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-13 07:26:21

"Anonymous, 2009-07-11 19:26:19", you shouldn’t even be watching this movie, its an 18! as for feeling victimised and everyone else who felt disgusted by this movie,...WHAT did you expect when you saw trailers, watched or heard about Borat and saw interveiws!!! Sacha IS outrageous but thats what we want to see, NO other film has made me laugh out loud soo much ever!... some people just like to be able to complain and feel like they have "morals", let go a little!, there is a time and a place,...and a packed out cinema full of other people up for a laugh is it!!! Martin, Staines, UK

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-13 09:20:58

Bruno was very very funny...It made an absolute mockery of stupid people...It is an intelligent movie as are most satires...People with limited intellectual scope may find this sort of movie at a superficial level joltingly offensive... but such is the product of limited understanding...Bruno is NOT pornographic btw None of the Scenes were Sexual despite the display of sexual acts..brilliant camera work and direction.. 5 Stars !!!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-14 20:20:38

I’m sorry (actually, not really), but those of you stating how "shocked" and "disgusted" you were by this movie haven’t a leg to stand on. You’re either very, very ill-informed, or you’re being completely disingeuous. C’mon people!!! This is SACHA-FRIGGIN-BARON COHEN....what on God’s green Earth were you expecting???!!! You sound EXACTLY like the young lads who volunteer to go off to war, and then come back complaining about how war ruined their poor, fragile psyches. You’re the very folks PT Barnun opined about. You got EXACTLY what you paid for!!!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-15 01:23:53

This is as shocking and disgusting as it is funny. And its real. "Bruno" unashamedly reveals what we need to be ashamed of. If we are shocked it is because we are shocking. If we are disgusted it is because we are disgusting. There is so much genius in it. And its truly disturbing, the very fact that our liberation has come at a price of freeing our most darkest and dangerous desires. We can only hope to grow from the filth that we have allowed to weed through our society. ~ Sha-Rone Kushnir, Los Angeles.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-18 10:28:07

    love it!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-19 02:55:46

The movie was hilarious! A bit over the top, but still funny. The movie shows the ignorant,over-religious, conservative redneck part of America. Cohen’s movie continues to reveal this part of America to the rest of the world, and to acknowledge people. Only if Cohen did a movie about N. koreans then maby he can solve this nuclear threat with the U.S!

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-19 22:06:31

When we went to the theater there was only one movie starting around the current time. It was "Bruno", we walked in and 5 minutes later was walking right back out. This movie is terrible and I hate the fact our children are growing up with this sick type of comedy. Gays should be banned from TV.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-19 22:11:13

From the movie: "This show was worse than getting cancer." I agree.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-19 22:15:54

"Anonymous, 2009-07-19 22:06:31" -Gays should not be banned from TV. This movie was sickening, yes, and I walked out long befre it was over as well, but that is not "gays" fault. That is the fault of a screen writer, producer, actor, and crew who exploited and majorly over did every gay stereotype. It was disgusting, but that is NOT the fault of they gay community.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-20 08:54:50

Bruno was a filthy, painful waste of time. I cannot believe I was stupid enough to not read a review about it first. It was 60 minutes of vile filth, abhorrently offensive, brainless: a waste of $17. If CHILD ABUSE offends you, if graphic HOMOSEXUAL PORNOGRAPHY offends you (just a straight porn would offend someone - no Im not homophobic) and If watching real COUPLES Have SEX and S&M scenes offends you(although some may be turned on by this), and RELIGIOUS VILIFICATION and RACISM offends you, then PLEASE DO NOT SEE THIS MOVIE. Little Britain was funny, Summer Heights High was funny, We Can Be Heroes is funny.... This is NOT. For me who has a high tolerance to "unique" movies, and I "get satire", in fact i love it. But I I found this INHUMANE and PUTRID. It was an ASSAULT to my senses, my ears and my eyes. To see a "Black Baby" by the name of "OJ", being crucified on a cross, and a penis that fills the screen. Shame on the musos at the end who supported the Cruelty, Ignorance and Hate in this movie. It is very sad that it relies on extreme antics BOYCOTT BRUNO.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-21 14:24:52

I just saw this movie with my friends and mom, it was very uncomfortable not knowing it would show body parts in sick, perverted ways. I don’t even know how they allowed this in theatres. It was like a porno. The previews have no hints or ways of showing this movie would be so graphic. I didn’t even get how some of this is fake or real. And to make fun of racism of people and stereotypes, how would have those people not have something done, how could they stand it. Especially "O.J."? I have to admit some of this was completely hilarious. But how could someone that is Jewish himself, do that?

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-22 00:39:05

Fantastic satire. Bruno shows how ludicrous racism, homophobia and religious extremism can be. Yes its vulgar, but that’s half the fun. If it’s ok to show people killing each other on the movie screen then it’s ok to see a pair of balls. Get over yourselves.

While it is true that most of the best comedians are funny by using sexually and racially charged jokes, the best of these include some form of self-deprecation in their comedy. They realize that they are as ridiculous as the people they make fun of. To me this is what differentiates Sacha Baron Cohen from these great comedians - he only makes fun of other groups. Even his supposedly big Jew jokes (’Throw the Jew down the well, etc.’) are really making fun of ignorant rednecks, Kazakhs, etc. They do not actually make fun of Jews at all. This, coming from an orthodox Jew Cohen and taking the form of three characters which are thinly veiled caricatures of groups traditionally at odds with Jews (Ali G the stupid black Muslim, Borat the stupid Kazakh Muslim, and Bruno the sex-crazed aggressive gay Austrian) make it hard to defend his work as ’comedy’. And by thinly veiled I mean - Ali G is blackface without the blackface, Borat is Kazakh but is supposed to be your typical Middle Eastern or Central Asian Muslim, Bruno makes Austrians (and Germans by proxy) look like queens and in the same sweep makes use of the not-so-nuanced gay equivalent of blackface, etc. Baron Cohen is obviously intelligent - he must have carefully picked his characters for prime-time - and so it is hard not to see him as a racist. Why didn’t he instead use a character who was a big-nosed greedy Jew banker who fondles little boys? Not so funny anymore, hmm? In the final analysis of Baron Cohen’s ’oeuvre’, which groups suffer? Blacks, Muslims, gays, Austrians...I’d rather pay my money to watch Avigdor Lieberman speak for two hours.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-22 14:57:05

I laughed my ass off in the cinema. "Bruno" is completely over the top and extremely graphic, but brilliantly entertaining. I get the feeling that most of the people who get uncomfortable with the sexually tinted scenes in this movie are simply ashamed of or insecure about their own sexuality. The funny thing is that this is most probably one of the things that "Bruno" actually tries to expose. I think many haters dont understand how smart this seemingly dumb movie really is and in how many ways it tries to expose the silly parts of human nature.

  • Anonymous, 2009-07-24 10:17:59

Bruno was a delicate balance of defacing extreme ideologies around the world and provided a sense of humor for the viewers, despite it’s overexcessive nudity in some scenes. Akron, Ohio citizen supports this! I especially loved the scene in Israel where Bruno confused "Hamas" with "humus". Brilliant!
