Joan, Toni, Maya and Lynn are back with Girlfriends: The Third Season, now available on DVD. The popular UPN, and now CW network, show once suffered long waits between DVD releases, but now season three comes only four months after the release of season two.

Season three covers 2002 - 2003, which marked the peak of the show’s popularity. Fans were treated with guest stars, such as hip-hop artist Common, Jennifer Lewis ("Jackie’s Back," "What’s Love Got To Do With It?"), Rockmond Dunbar ("Punks," "Soul Food") and more. In addition, the season tackled topics such as interracial dating, divorce and HIV/AIDS. Each "controversial" plot line is soaked in sitcom gloss, but considering this is one of few black sitcoms at the time to mildly approach the subjects, one cannot be too picky.

Season three earned the show its only Emmy nomination and three NAACP Image Awards nominations.

The 4-disc DVD set includes all 24 episodes and two features: "It’s What You Wear That Counts" and "Here Comes the Bride: An Invitation Inside ’The Wedding’". "It’s What You Wear That Counts" is an in-depth look at the fashions of Girlfriends with fun commentary from the cast and crew.

"Here Comes the Bride: An Invitation Inside ’The Wedding’" is the making of the final two episodes of season three, "The Wedding", which is Toni’s wedding. The season one DVD had no special features so season two and three definitely makes up for the lack of goodies.

"Girlfriends: The Third Season" gives everything fans can ask for plus some. Another fun ride with everyone’s favorite "Girlfriends" and keeps us anticipating for season four.

Unfortunately, this week the CW network announced Girlfriends is officially canceled and no future episodes will be filmed -- not even a finale.
