We Need To Talk About Kevin
"We Need to Talk about Kevin" is the film adaption of Lionel Shriver’s award winning novel of the same name. The movie presents a unique and disturbing take on the concept of motherhood, toeing the genre line between drama and horror. Tilda Swinton turns in a magnificent performance as Eva, matched only by Ezra Miller’s spot-on Kevin.
Kevin is a dark child, perceived by Eva as a malevolent force devoid of human empathy. As she attempts to fit the behavioral norm of a mother without feeling any love for her child, Kevin’s psychopathy increases to the culmination, an act of gruesome violence. "We Need to Talk about Kevin" asks why there is such a child as Kevin. Without providing a clear answer, the audience is challenged to confront social taboos in a way familiar to fans of Lionel Shriver’s novels.
The Blu-ray combo pack is an excellent way to experience the film. With intense detail to visual detail and sound, "Kevin" is meant to be viewed in the highest quality format. Shot with a 2:35:1 aspect ratio, unusual for a drama, the visual element is more of a narration than anything the characters have to say audibly.
A half-hour feature with the cast and crew delves into the heart of the film in surprising artistic detail. Watching Tilda Swinton discuss her craft with such articulation is always enlightening and enjoyable, as is hearing Miller’s take on the character of Kevin and his motivations.
A brief interview with the author is featured. Lionel Shriver covers a surprising amount of ground as she’s not one to embellish. Also included is a deleted scene, Telluride Film Festival’s honoring of Swinton, and the original theatrical trailer.
