BFFs Tyler Oakley & Korey Kuhl Talk 'The Amazing Race'

Jim Halterman READ TIME: 7 MIN.

By now you know the 28th edition of CBS's long-running competition reality series, "The Amazing Race," ended with our favorite gay team (social media star Tyler Oakley and his BFF, Korey Kuhl) not winning the million-dollar prize but they did make it to the finals and ran a great race so bragging rights are there for the taking.

But they're not finished popping up on our televisions as the pair will appear this Wednesday on the special prime time episodes of daytime game show, "The Price Is Right" along with past contestants on "The Amazing Race" and host Phil Keoghan. (Contestants from "Survivor" and "Big Brother" appear on Monday and Tuesday's episodes.)

EDGE talked with Oakley and Kuhl about the surrealness of hearing "come on down" on "The Price Is Right" as well as their "Amazing Race" experience, including all the sexy men they encountered throughout the race.

'Come on down!'

EDGE: Tell me about being on 'The Price Is Right?' It was a lot of 'The Amazing Race' teams, right?

Korey Kuhl: It was a lot of the teams from previous seasons and, for me, that was so cool, because I was a fan of so many people there that I was having a freak out moments just as some of the participants in the audience were having.

Tyler Oakley: I mean, it's something that you grow up with and I remember watching shows like that with my Grandma when she would babysit me so, yeah, totally surreal to be in that world. That iconic 'Come on down! You're the next contestant on "The Price Is Right."' To hear your name attached to that was bonkers. It was insane but so much fun. And the opportunity to play the game with super fans. The vibe of the day was incredible!

EDGE: Do we get to see you run down the aisle like we see everyone else do?

Tyler Oakley: You'll just have to tune in and find out!

EDGE: How hard was it to keep the secret about 'The Amazing Race' outcome?

Korey Kuhl: For me, it honestly wasn't tough at all. I'm glad they make us sign all those forms but especially with my family because those few weeks where we struggled and were towards the bottom, it was fun to see them squirm and stress out and worry. So for me, it was just all part of the experience and I'm glad my family got to live it because those are the emotions we lived through on those days when we filmed those legs so I'm glad they felt what we had to feel.

Tyler Oakley: Totally agree. I made my family think any week could be the last and the audience that we had online felt it every time I would tweet something ominous, they'd be like 'Oh no, what's happening this week?' I loved that because that's what the feeling was every day on the 'Race.' You wake up and think 'One small mistake and this could be your last day.' I wanted it to be the same for the people watching.

Reliving the season?

EDGE: As you were watching the season, how did you feel reliving it?

Tyler Oakley: For me, it was so fun because everyone in my life would reach out after every episode and ask for inside info. Especially because I live in LA now and most of my family is in Michigan, it felt like a way to connect with everyone on a weekly basis on something that was so fun and exciting. Not just that but something completely new for our audience, they got to go on an adventure around the world with us. Also, when you're on the 'Race,' you're so just with your teammate you don't get to see what everyone else is up to so seeing everyone else's perspective is also exciting.

Korey Kuhl: For me, it's still so fresh in my mind I can honestly close my eyes and picture myself paragliding over the French Alps and I can close my eyes and take myself back to so many of things that we did and saw. It's awesome that we have it documented for life. We bonded so closely, especially with other two top three teams. It was so fun to see their experiences.

EDGE: Going to the last episode, when in there did you kind of know, 'Okay, we don't have this?'

Tyler Oakley: You've got to race very single minute as if anything can happen and that's what we were thinking the whole time. Sure it would suck when you knew you were in the back of the pack for a second and any mistake can happen to any team. So I thought we had a chance and I wanted to think we had a chance the entire time. It wasn't until we got to the memory challenge where I was able to see Matt and Dana and then I was like 'Ok! That's that!' I don't think they meant for me to see but the thing is even if that were the case, it didn't mean we were going to putz the rest of it. We were going to run and give it our all. We were not about to walk to the finish line. We were going to run it the entire time.

Talking Brandon

EDGE: Tyler, let's talk about Brandon, that gorgeous safety instructor in the final leg of the race...

Tyler Oakley: You know what? We ran the race and tried to just take it all in, boys included. [laughs] I feel like at the finish line with all the past contestants clapping you in, they could have just as easily had all the men that I probably thirsted over throughout the entire month. Whether it was our instructor in Chamonix when we were going up the French Alps or a dance instructor in Georgia or, who else, Korey? Probably every leg had somebody.

Korey Kuhl: That would've been great to have all the hot instructors clapping us in at the end.

EDGE: I know your friendship was already strong going into this but do you feel like you changed personally?

Korey Kuhl: I've been trying to reflect on this. We've been done for five months and we got a lot of those questions at the end of the show. I think we both learned that, yes, we are a strong team and, yes, we do have the support of each other but we're also just such strong individuals, too. This race is such a team thing but it just goes to show how strong we are as individuals...we did all these crazy things that neither of us would have ever sought out to do at home. It was really eye opening.

Tyler Oakley: Totally! One of my favorite things that I took away from the experience was allowing myself a chance to step away or unplug. I know the theme was social media influencers and they were always asking in interviews how much were we missing our phone and trying to get those soundbites but none of us were really were thinking about that. We were there to race so we were not thinking about vlogging or anything like that. So being able to step away from, I guess, an industry that doesn't have off seasons or doesn't allow for time off, I learned it's okay to do that and things are fine when you get back. It was eye opening for me and made me think 'Wow, I should do that more often.'

EDGE: What are you both doing with your summer?

Korey Kuhl: It's so funny because when you look at both of our 2015 with doing the Slumber Party Tour and then filming a documentary that took up three quarters of the year and then doing a book tour and then going on 'The Amazing Race,' I think this summer the both of us are ready to just relax and take a breather!

Tyler Oakley: I'm taking a nap!

EDGE: At least you can say you made it to the finals of 'The Amazing Race,' right?

Tyler Oakley: We always said we wanted to run the entire race and going into the finale it felt like even right now obviously Matt and Dana took home the first place but I still don't feel like we lost!

The primetime edition of "The Price Is Right" airs Monday thru Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS. For more on Tyler Oakley, check out his popular YouTube page.
